Captive Prince Trilogy by C.S. Pacat || #reviewfriday

I had been consumed by a reader’s block (meaning I couldn’t get myself to read anything even if I was locked away in a tower with nothing but books to occupy myself with) for about a year till this March. No book caught my interest; nothing seemed appealing enough to be even worth giving a try and the ones I did start, I left before barely making 10 pages into the book. That’s when I saw several accounts I follow on my various social media raving about this newly completed book series about two heirs to the thrones of two rival kingdoms falling in love. I was told it was full of violence and rape and sex and definitely not for the light-hearted. For the first time in a year, a book sparked my fancy. When I heard it had a hate to love trope as well, I was fully sold and bought the books the very next day on Amazon. Not only did I not regret the choice, I am also, currently, fully recovered from my reader’s block!

Genre: Romance, Adventure, Historical Fantasy, Political Intrigue

Trigger Warnings: Slavery, Rape, Paedophilia, Torture

The first book in the trilogy, Captive Prince was published in 2013 and the final book, Kings Rising in 2016. I pity anyone who had to wait that long for the conclusion of the series because the first book and the second book, Prince’s Gambit, leave you with cliffhangers so intriguing you can’t get your hands on the final book fast enough. In fact, most of the plot twists and plot development happens in Kings Rising.
Captive Prince builds the foreground of the story. Damen, the rightful heir to the throne of the kingdom of Akielos, is shipped off to the rival kingdom of Vere as a pleasure slave to Laurent, the prince of Vere, when Damen’s bastard stepbrother Kastor seizes power of Akielos. Trapped among his enemies, Damen has no choice but to serve Laurent, to whom his identity is not revealed as it would surely mean instant death for him. Laurent is as Machiavellian and merciless as he is beautiful. And he has a very valid reason to be pitiless to Damen; he had killed Laurent’s older brother, whom he adored and worshipped, in a battle. So all Damen can do is remain in disguise until he can escape and reclaim his throne. But he gets more than he bargained for when he ends up having to fight not just his own battles(literally and figuratively), but help in Laurent’s too.
Prince’s Gambit is where the action really takes off and by King’s Rising, there are so many neck-breaking plot twists, we are left feeling exhausted in an exhilarating way. I don’t want to spoil anything but let me just say, by the time you finish the last book, your heart would have jumped into your throat a million times.

There are many things about this series that I really loved. The contrast between the characters of Damen and Laurent were one. Damen is dark and buff; a war hero who is strong and honourable but trusting to a fault. His character gives off very warm vibes; soft and patient.  Now, Laurent on the other hand, is as cold and unforgiving as his ice blue eyes. He may look like a cherub, all blond and pretty, but he’s cunning and ruthless; a boy forced to grow up and fend for himself after he was left orphaned at a young age in the clutches of his treacherous uncle. It was fascinating to watch stiff and untrusting Laurent turn to putty in Damen’s hands after all the hate (it was probably mostly sexual tension) turned to love. Another thing I liked is the author’s normalizing portrayal of the queer characters. She created a world were homosexuality was not only accepted but also preferred (because it meant less unwanted pregnancies, but still). Pacat’s world is also very sex-positive, as anyone could have sex with anyone they wanted, anytime they wanted, even in public. There was a lot of rape and paedophilia resulting from that though, so it definitely isn’t an ideal world. In fact, all the injustice and corruption that is the fruit of monarchy was prevalent in the story; torture, capital punishments without fair trial and playing dirty for the attainment of power and position. The political intrigue in the story is one of the most gripping aspects. Power and the thirst for power makes people brutal and both Damen and Laurent are victims of this brutality bestowed upon them by none other than the people they trusted the most.

Now this is probably a boring thing to notice but as a Literature student I have to mention this. Pacat’s language is brilliant; it’s mesmerizing and poetic but precise and witty at the same time. "This was Vere, voluptuous and decadent, country of honeyed poison". “Laurent could inspire homicidal tendencies simply by breathing.” Honestly, I want this printed on a T-shirt with the names of my choice. Pacat’s torture scenes and sex scenes are explicit without being vile or disturbing.  She also handles the complicated plot with absolute ease and succeeds in getting the readers to think but makes it a pleasure read all the same.

So, all in all I would say Captive Prince is definitely worth a read if you are into well-written, plot-oriented M/M novels. But fair warning, this is not for the faint-hearted or the easily offended. The trigger warnings I mentioned are very much indicative of the theme of the story; there is rape, torture, slavery, paedophilia and everything associated with a liberal medieval society under powerful monarchies. Proceed with caution. Personally, I enjoyed the trilogy a lot and look forward to more works from this author.

Top 5 Eloisa James Novels. No.2 is a fan favourite.

Eloisa James is one of those readers whose books I buy without even reading the blurb. Because I know it will be good. That said, I am biased towards quite a few of them. So this is my very biased list of Top 5 Eloisa James novels.

* If you want to buy them, just click on the image. It takes you to the amazon.com page. Also none of them are affiliate links. I don't earn anything when you buy a book. But one of my favourite author does.*

Let's count backwards, shall we?

At number five, we have:

5.ENCHANTING PLEASURES (#3 Pleasures)

Why I like it

Gaby has just returned from India to wed Peter Dewland. But Peter despises her and convinces his elder brother Quill to marry her instead. Quill is immediately attracted to Gaby but had refrained from perusing her due to his accident from years back which had left him crippled. He gets very painful headaches on performing strenuous activities which is not ideal for producing an heir. But one kiss and Quill swears to make Gaby his own, damn any headaches.

4.POTENT PLEASURES (#1 Pleasures)

Why I like it

Charlotte had been lured by a masked footman at a masquerade party but not against her will. Years had passed and Charlotte had made a dazzling debut in society. She meets the man again, but turns out he is no ordinary footman-he is an Earl and does not remember her. Was he really the masked stranger or was it a twin?

I know, I know, two books from the same series. But, I told you, this a very biased list. *Grins*.

3.WHEN THE DUKE RETURNS (#4 Desperate Duchesses)

Why I like it

This is the story of opposites. The Duke of Cosway and Lady Isidore are as different from each other as possible and that is what makes their love story fascinating for the readers. The two were married by proxy since the Duke was away touring distant lands. The Duke returns after many years to find that the sweet obedient wife he had envisioned in his head is quite different from the reality. Isidore is wilful, headstrong and just too beautiful.

I love hate-love stories.

2. UGLY DUCHESS (#4 Fairy Tales)

Why I Like it

This is another book from James’ Fairy tale series. The way in which the author brings life to the fairy tales of the past make the entire series enjoyable. The Ugly Duchess inspired from the ugly Duckling is the story of Theo and her Duke who turns into a pirate. It is another tale which shows that love is much more than mere good looks and riches and for those reasons one of my favourites.

And Now for the grand reveal.  P.S there is a special surprise for you at the end.

1.When Beauty Tames the Beast (#2 Fairy Tales)

Why I like it

Beauty and the Beast had always been one of my favourite stories from childhood. And when I grew up the idea of a love which is much beyond just materialistic things like good looks made me love the story even more. So I was excited bout this book even before I began reading it. The historical twist Eloisa James gave to the story made it so much more enjoyable. The amount of research she had done is very evident in the way she portrays the time period and other details.

By now you must have understood that I'm a big fan of her. I have read most of her works. But, after a while it became hard to keep track of all the novels. It became one big blur. My friend Jordan makes Author Checklists. I asked her (begged, is more like it) to make me one. Finally she agreed and here is the final result. And since I want to share this with my fellow Eloisa fans, I have convinced her to put it up on Amazon. Isn't it gorgeous?

A Review of Me Before You by Jojo Moyes|| Living-not just Existing

I’ve always been a very visual reader; I don’t just see the words , rather, I see the world that the words create. Vivid descriptions and imagery – of the characters, the places, the events—these are what attract me to a book.  I appreciate proper language in a book, though the connotation of the term ‘proper’ is open to varying interpretations; it is satisfying to read a book wherein the effort put in by the author is felt and acknowledged. And though they say to never judge a book by its cover, I’ve fallen for a book’s outfit uncountable number of times—hook, line and sinker.

Me Before You, is, in a word, beautiful. It is the kind of beauty that comes with simplicity and imperfection— entirely, utterly real.  Moyes’s story of Louisa Clark and Will Traynor is not just their story; it is a story where each and every character has a tale to tell if they are under the spotlight. The sister who is a single mother, the inattentive boyfriend, the overbearing parents— there is a whole lot more to them than what meets the eye at first.

Louisa, a caretaker with no prior experience, strives to convince Will, a dissatisfied quadriplegic, to give another shot at life. However, the end results show that the tables have turned when it is Will who makes Louisa see that there is more to life than just existing; he teaches her to live.
The simplistic writing with ample doses of wit and humour makes for an easy yet memorable read. Will's dry and sarcastic drawl is quite a contrast to Louisa's upbeat chatter.

*Spoiler Alert*

The scene where Will gifts Louisa her cherished 'bumblebee tights' on her birthday, something she had mentioned in a passing remark, is a particularly heartwarming one. We get to see here that Will is actually quite fond of Louisa and that she has, by that time, grown on him. Later on, that endearment progresses into a truckload of affection when, a stunning red dress and a wedding later, Will proclaims,“Sometimes, Clark, you are pretty much the only thing that makes me want to get up in the morning.”

The way the book ended, the expected and yet unexpected culmination was one of my favourite aspects of the book— another thing that adds to its beauty.

*End of spoiler*
Me Before You movie poster

A real tear-jerker, this heartwarming light read is a welcome respite from everyday problems that are mostly blown out of proportion. The tale is spun in such a manner that we can’t help but intimately become a part of the characters’ lives—crying when they cry, and laughing when they laugh. This book is, without a doubt, one of the most worthwhile ones I’ve read in a while, prompting me to pick up another one of Moyes’s books, Honeymoon in Paris. Well, that is another review for another day.

If you like reading Moyes's work, then this checklist is for you. I compiled all the details of her work, including blurb and publishing date. It's the #1 easiest navigable checklist available in the world. And only for $0.99. Click on the image to go to amazon.
